I know a lot of people are still having trouble with the basics so hopefully this will help.

Those videos make a nice introduction to working with BTP, and show how easy it can be to get started.
1.0 GHz G4 iBook, 12", 1256MB, OS 10.4.11, 1024x768 pixel resolution (2004 and still going strong.)

It's called Camstudio. I think it was the first thing that came up when I searched for "free screen recording". I'm still working on getting the quality up though. Probably dropping my resolution while capturing would help.
