Making a plate chiller dry

Post by vilamiu »

After cleaning my plate chiller (shirron), I got water stuck inside of it and I don't know how to get rid of it. How do I do it?

Thanks in advance, Raphael

I don't have one (and after reading the threads below about how difficult they are to clean I won't buy one now), but to get the water out after you've thoroughly cleaned it with a caustic cleaning solution, probably your best bet is to use compressed air and "help" it by holding it in such a way that gravity helps remove some of the water as you blow out the water with the air.

Apparently, some people go an extra step and bake it dry.

I wish my immersion chiller would cool as fast as your plate chiller or an immersion chiller, but I like how easy it is to clean and it doesn't care if there's a lot of spices, leaf hops, etc., floating around in the wort as I cool it. I'll gladly trade time spent cooling and more water wasted to all of the extra time cleaning the plate chiller (and maybe more water cleaning it out). You no doubt feel it's worth the tradeoff, especially if you live in a warm climate where the water temperature isn't very cool.
