XP killing Beer Tools Pro

Post by mmmooretx »

:cry: I have already had Jeff send a new key when I migrated from XP Pro /64 SP2 with all updates to XP Pro SP2 with auto update activated. It worked fine for a while, now I cannot even bring it up. Has anyone else had similar problems? I hate to keep asking for a refreshed key and re-installing, this is also on a new drive. Has anyone tried running under Wine in Linux? A Linux version would be nice but I am sure Jeff's plate is already full...

One thing you can try is turn off your internet connection before starting BTP. If you need a new key you can visit the key request page here. That's the same page you are directed to when you click the "Go Online" button when prompted in the registration panel.

What version of BTP are you running? This isn't a direct answer to your question, but I tried running BTP in Ubuntu under CrossOver Office (a Wine derivative) with mixed results. Version 1.0.29 wouldn't run, but earlier versions would. I cant say if 1.0.29 would work under Wine directly. And yeah, a Linux version would be nice. I think there may be one in beta.
BTP 2.0.22 (Linux (.deb) 64 bit)
BTP 2.0.24 (Windows 10-20H2)
BTP 2.1.0.9 Beta (Windows 10-20H2)

Still a no-go on my computer

Post by billvelek »

Well, after spending probably as much as a good 15 hours, off and on, trying to recover my BTP program on my WIN-XP system a month or two ago, I finally gave up and quit trying, hoping that a new release of BTP would somehow miraculously fix the problem. I'm sorry to say that I just downloaded BTP version 1.5.6 and although it looked like the installation went just fine, I get the same error message when I try to start it up.

This is the same problem that I had encountered sometime last year but managed to somehow get lucky and fixed it; no dice this time around, although it appears to be an identical problem. I don't know if it is the same problem as mmmooret has had, but I'm pretty sure it is the same as a problem another member had sometime back when we were comparing notes. Nevertheless, it appears to be a very rare problem that I can't even say is "absolutely" within BTP, so I figure it will never get a close look by anyone. But, given that EVERY program I have has continued to run normally since this BTP problem manifested itself a couple of months ago, I'd give at least a hundred to one odds that it is something within BTP.

Anyway, I'm just too exhausted with this to try anything else anymore as far as getting it to work on this computer. I still haven't bothered to load it on my wife's laptop, but I guess I ought to at least do that much. I brewed two batches of beer at my son's house on Saturday -- an IPA and an Oatmeal Stout -- and thought of downloading BTP on his computer, but his is so screwed up and runs so slow that I just didn't bother. He has so much music crap and the like on there, and the computer is about six years old, and the little time I spend makes me think he has a virus -- it is SLOW to the point that I was ready to scream.

Anyway, I'm very sad that I can't play with the program anymore and help with feedback (to the extent that it might have been helpful). I don't think a new computer is in the foreseeable future, and I dread doing anything as drastic as reformatting my HD and loading everything again; besides taking so long, I'd be taking at least some risk that I might screw up something that I actually NEED for my livelihood, so it isn't worth the risk just for brewing software.

Anyway, I hope the new version fulfills some of the hopes that have been expressed in these forums for so long. I guess I'll have to beg my wife to let me use her laptop. :shock:

Cheers.

Hey bill, sorry that BTP is still giving you trouble. I uploaded version 1.5.9 to your downloads area for you to try. I worked on some issues that may or may not be related to the problem you are experiencing. Please let me know if it starts up and if there are any messages along the way. Thanks!

Maybe this info will help determine the problem

Post by billvelek »

Thanks for trying to help, Jeff.

I downloaded version 1.5.9 but before installing it, I did the following as a precaution.

1. I shut down all programs except for antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc.;
2. I uninstalled the last installed version -- 1.5.6 -- using the latest version of "CCleaner", which always seems to work pretty well for me;
3. I created a new restore point;
4. I did a registry scrub;
5. I installed ver. 1.5.9 and received the same error message that I've been receiving for the past couple of months.

This is what it said:
Error Signature
AppName: beertools pro 1.5.exe AppVer: 1.5.9.209 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 021c1040

I also saved the error report before it was sent to Microsoft; it was just a text file, and in case anyone else in the group can decipher it, here it is:

I just noticed that the error report doesn't seem to have the same info, so I'll try to build an image from some screen shots.

EDIT: no way I can do that because it looks like it will take hundreds of shots and I can't spend that much time. I can find the other file okay -- a 'dmp' type file -- but I have no way to save it; Windows XP won't allow it. I just intalled 'hobocopy' to see if I can get around it, but I can't figure out how to get it to work. It looks like it might be a command line type of program. I haven't used one in years and so I'm not too comfortable experimenting around just typing commands.

It's ALIVE!!! The latest version works for me!

Post by billvelek »

I have no explanation; I don't know if Jeff and Lathe fixed something deliberately in the latest version, or if some code changes just happened to fix my problem by dumb luck, or it some automatic windows update undid something evil that it did previously. All I know is that I downloaded beta version 1.5.10.0-beta, followed my normal procedures before installing any software (the same stuff I've done with the past several versions), and kept my fingers crossed ... AND IT'S WORKING NOW. Halleluia.

Jeff and Lathe, a big thank you if you guys managed to do this. I hope that the other user or two who have mentioned a similar problem will be able to get up and running.

Cheers.

Bill Velek

P.S.: Well, I thought I had saved a bunch of btp stuff -- recipes and my equipment calibration, etc., but I guess in the process of monkeying around with this over and over, and scrubbing everything with a .btp extension, it's gone now. I hate to need to start over, but I'm very happy that I have the program up and running again.

XP killing BTP?

Post by slothrob »

Good to have you back, Bill.

My daughter has my computer in Africa for 5 weeks and my brewing life is much more difficult without BTP.

Brewing without BTP

Post by billvelek »

Well, I got so excited with having access to BTP again that I just had to brew; well, I also had a couple of brews that I wanted to get bottled before leaving for vacation anyway so that they could be conditioning, so that was more than enough of an excuse. However, because of my former problems, I didn't have any recipes on file, and no calibration of my mash tun, or templates or examples of mash schedules, or even inventory, so basically I just designed a quick recipe to determine IBUs and gravity, and just more or less winged it ... like I've had to do for the past several months anyway.

So I started things on Wednesday morning -- got all my bottles sanitized, and did my mash and mash out, but sparge my was extremely slow (a rarity) so I couldn't finish it until after court in the afternoon. I then bottled and brewed when I got back from court. I still managed to get two batches bottled and two batches brewed and in the fermenter before going to bed and then getting up at 2:00 a.m. to drive to Florda for vacation. I got a super sunburn yesterday, despite sitting under a beach umbrella most of the time, so I'm sitting in the condo playing around with my wife's laptop.

I decided to download BTP and install it on her computer, and don't you know that I need a dadburned registration key to finish the installation or open it. I guess I'll get to BTP later.

The reason my sparge was so slow was because I did a partigyle of wheat beer, using 5 pounds of regular flour in place of wheat, but didn't use any rice hulls. I used 4 pounds of 2-row and 2 pounds of honeymalt, and my efficiency came out to about 85 percent, which is a bit higher than my usual 80 percent. I think I've mentioned this before, but I think that high figure might be due to my specifying wheat in my recipe but using flour instead. I'd like to see flour added to the ingredient database.

Cheers.
