Irish Red Hops

Post by Eddie O. »

Hi am fairly new to brewing, 6 batches to date. I just brewed an Irish Red and while doing the research to determine the ingredients I noticed that according to BJCP guidelines an Irish Red generally has no flavor hops and little to no hop aroma. When I look at all of the recipes on here for Irish Red everyone has aroma and flavor hops in the recipe. Is this a personal preference, lack of knowledge, or what? One guy claims to have submitted his recipe in a contest and scored well, but the recipe would give the beer a strong hop aroma and flavor. Anyone care to put me in my place on this subject. Thanks

Hi Eddie,

Below is a link to the BJCP style guideline for Irish Red. Please note that if you are entering competitions then it is important to keep your brew within the guidelines. Not everyone brews to the guidlines and hence the many different recipe interpretations based on what the brewer had in mind and to his/her tastes. Just remember...It's all about the beer!! :)

Hope this helps!
