Whirlpool

Does anyone use the whirlpool method to remove the hops, trub, etc., at the end of the boil. If so, can you explain how this works? I have always just filtered out the wort by running it through a sieve into primary, but for the first time on my last brew, my spout got clogged. Just wondering what the best technique is.
