Spam problems

Post by brewer13210 »

It appears that the forum receives more than a little spam posts. The admins may want to consider making the sign-up process for new members a little more difficult...for instance including an e-mail conformation.

Email confirmation is already enabled. In fact I receive between 6 and 10 bounced email confirmations because of bogus addresses. I have also installed a mod that prevents unconfirmed user profiles from showing up in the member list. Every day I have to delete about a dozen spam users, and I have installed another mod to facilitate deleting user accounts in bulk. If you think there is a better way, please let me know.

I spent a little time working on the forum yesterday and added some code that puts all new accounts on restriction for a period of 48 hours. Basically what this does is make it so it is impossible for spammers to include active BBCode in their posts, rendering all links and images useless. This gives me time to delete posts with pornographic images in them before these images can actually display. Disabling the links in these posts also foils the attempts of spammers to give their own websites search engine popularity by littering the internet with links to their sites.

Hopefully these adjustments will prove helpful in discouraging spammers from hitting this forum so hard. Without links and images, there isn't much point to them posting here.
