What is the real difference between "black patent", "black malt", and "black roast"?

I asked this before, with regard to black malt and patent. The answer is that there is none other than name alone. Both are the same MALTED grain that is highly roasted. Roast Barley on the other hand is unmalted grain that contributes flavour and colour but no fermentable qualities. It is an important ingredient in the flavouring of dry stouts. You can make your own by throwing pearl barley in the oven for about 3hrs @ about 80 - 90f. Tastes much better when fresh. CHEERS!
