Grain Bed & Mash Tun Dimensions in HERMS/RIMS System

I am in the process of designing a HERMS system. I am wondering if the thickness of the grain bed makes any difference? If a keg or round cooler is used for a mash tun, the grain bed will be narrower and deep, but if a rectangular cooler is used, the grain bed will be spreadout and thiner. Is one better than the other? Is there any difference in efficiency?
