BJCP 2014 Update

Post by sigrooms »

When will we see the application updated for the recent changes to the BJCP guidelines? There hasn't been much activity here or via updates these last three months. Can we get an idea of the future plans with the application?

The 2014 style guidelines will be posted soon, in "beta / review" mode for at least several months to give everyone a chance to review and comment, suggest changes, look for errors or omissions, etc. This is a huge update (many new styles added, and a ton of updates and reorganization to existing styles) and it's wise to allow this time to make sure everything is covered.

There is no set timetable, but the general feeling is that they will become "live" around the new year.

Thanks for the update. Don’t hesitate to post here again when the guidelines go live. I would like to get them included on the site and in the software soon after.

Thanks!

Will do... it'll probably be a while before they are finalized and released as "official." With such a large set of changes, I predict there will be some... um... animated conversations on the BJCP forum once they are released for beta/review.

In addition to the new styles being added, there are some significant mods to existing styles (including renaming a few, and moving some from one top-level category to another) and an expansion of IPAs overall.

Gordon's presentation at NHC is available here if you want to get a sneak preview:

My understanding from Gordon's presentation @ NHC is that they do plan on having the guidelines available (when finalized) in some sort of standardized import/export format (perhaps XML) for ease of use in software, the iPhone and Android guideline apps, etc. Not sure of the exact details for that, or the timeline...

Current ETA is the end of March. The 2015 guidelines are not being used for the NHC.

The 2015 guidelines are now released for use. Competitions are free to implement them or not (there are no BJCP requirements to use the current guidelines, any comp is free to keep using the 2008 guidelines or to use something other than BJCP guidelines).

But retaining the 2008 styles as well?

EDIT: Never mind, I backed up my current version and installed the new one. I like how this was implemented, very easy to see which guidelines are in use.
